February 2008 Newsletter

Although this newsletter wasn’t really planned to go out yet, an item has come to our attention and we have decided to act promptly. Let me explain. As a limited company we need to have an up to date list of members and each of these members needs to sign a register and receive a membership certificate. Enclosed with this letter you will find a membership form, one for each member. Please will you ensure that each member fills in their name and address then signs and dates it. If you don’t receive enough forms to fill in one each please let us know and we will send you more. In due course everyone will receive a certificate confirming their membership of the Limited Company.

We are now able to introduce a junior membership to those of you who are between the ages of 5 and 18yrs. The cost is £2 per year. If you would like to join then please contact us and we will send you a membership form. Please contact Jason Ellway at 2 Venland Close, St. Cleer, Liskeard, Cornwall. PL14 5JZ  www.lsvc.org  for any membership enquiries.

Over the past year, as many of you will know, some members of our club and committee have planned and carried out a remarkable journey from John o’Groats to Land’s End. This was carried out on John Atkinson’s Gold Medal Burrell. The aim was to raise money for the Friends of Derriford Hospital Kidney Unit. John’s wife Ester had a kidney transplant there about 11 years ago. In total over £11,000 was raised and it is hoped that this money will go towards a blood testing “clotting machine” to be used in Plymouth.

Left: Chairman Stuart Ellway and Treasurer Sue Ellway present a cheque for £500 from LSVC to Ester and John Atkinson.

Right: Charlie and Wendy Dore receive a cheque for £11,165.15 from Ester and John Atkinson. Robin Daniel looks on.

New Year’s Eve produced the usual gathering of steam engines at The Winds of Change, South Petherwin. There were 7 engines present, 6 of them owned by members of the club. A very enjoyable evening was had by all who attended. At midnight all the engines blew their whistles in the traditional manner.

Finally if any if you have anything you would like putting into a newsletter, either written articles or photographs, please send them to either Sue Ellway,  sue@ellway.freeserve.co.uk  or Jan Hoare,  janhoare99@hotmail.com. or you can post them to the same address as the membership forms.

Please return all your membership forms as soon as possible and if you haven’t renewed your membership please can you now do so.

December 2007 Newsletter

For those of you who were unable to attend our AGM many changes took place. Initially there was the surprise retirement of our Secretary Roger Matthews and our Craft and Membership Secretary Sue Matthews. Janet Hoare was voted in as Roger’s replacement for the purposes of the AGM and it was further agreed if no-one came forward she would be happy to continue in the role, therefore any correspondence for her should go to 17 Trelinnoe Gardens, South Petherwin, Launceston, Cornwall. PL15 7TH.  Bob & Niki Brereton very kindly took on the craft section until a permanent replacement can be found.

Jason Ellway has taken over as membership secretary and of course membership for 2008 is now due for those of you who haven’t already paid.  The cost is £10 for joint membership and £6 for single membership.  All monies should be sent to Jason at 2, Venland Close, St. Cleer, Liskeard PL14 5JZ. A S.A.E. would be appreciated for the return of your membership cards, unless you are willing to wait for the next newsletter when they will be enclosed, Jason also does a sterling job looking after the club website and is waiting in anticipation of any news, photographs etc to add to the growing web page. Also can all of you think about sending news items to Sue for the next and subsequent newsletters.

Other committee changes include the resignations of Hilary Roberts and Clarence Tresidder  who ran the miniature Steam section, Martin & Sadie Yardley (Cars) and Mike Harris (Tractors), resigned respectively.

Although the club committee has gone through some changes this year, the rally is still on track to go ahead as expected on 18th / 19th & 20th July 2008 and on a more positive note we have recruited a section secretary for the car section an experienced rally section organiser her name is Laura Garrett. Robin Daniels is taking care of the miniature steam section admin and a miniature owner has been approached to look after the section on a day to day basis during the rally week,

John Higman has agreed to run the tractor section and Melvyn Benny and his partner will look after the motor cycles and vintage cycle section, so a massive thank you to those who have stepped into the breach to ensure the continuation of a committed committee and perpetuated rally. We are always looking for rally helpers and general committee members to ensure a smoothly run event , so if any of you or if you know of someone who is willing to take on any of the vacant positions either permanently or assisting in any way please contact any Director or committee member for further information.

We are always looking for people to help at the rally and during the set up and take down periods, if you can find some time to help, however much or little you can help it will always be appreciated and accepted and who knows you may just enjoy seeing the site evolve into a spectacular “Rally Event”. Please contact any of the Directors or committee or leave a comment on the website, lsvc.org if you can help.

I am sure that you will all be pleased to hear that a Cheque for £1000.00 will be donated to our designated charity, the RNLI, within the next few days.

The club is also trying to move into the 21st century by going electronic. In future if you wish to receive your newsletters via e-mail, just let me have your e-mail address, you can do this by contacting me at sue@ellway.freeserve.co.uk

We are also going to try and arrange some social events (probably just a social chat/ get together at a local pub to start with). The aim will be to have different locations around Cornwall, so that all members have a chance to have a local event rather than travelling to Liskeard every time. Again any event can be advertised via e-mail and website where applicable. If this becomes successful we envisage inviting guest speakers at special events.

We are sure that the changes will not affect you too much, change is good for growth and sustainment.

Finally, let the Directors & myself wish you all a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Regards

Sue Ellway, Interim Newsletter Editor
